February Stats / March Goals and a Cool Party Hat

Happy March!  I know I am not alone here but I am so ready for Spring.  Despite the worst Kentucky winter since moving here 10 years ago February was a pretty good fitness month.   I didn't hit all my numbers but that is mostly due to the time spent walking Sammie over 25 miles last month.  The majority of those miles were before work so it cut into my before work swim & weight workouts.  Wouldn't have it any other way!

February Recap

Swim: Goal - 13,600 Yards, Actual - 12,800 yards
Bike: Goal - 64 miles, Actual - 63.3 miles
Run: Goal - 40 miles, Actual - 40.75 miles
Walk: Goal - 0 miles, Actual - 25.4 miles
Weights/TRX: Goal - 8 sessions, Actual - 5
Yoga/Pilates: Goal - 2 sessions, Actual - 0
Races: Goal - 1, Actual -  1 - Frigid Fanny 4 Miler, 43m46s - 8/13 AG

February was the end of Run with Jess' Winter Miles challenge.  Total miles for this challenge was 113.  82 Running & 31 walking.

Frigid Fanny 4 Miler

Things I am looking forward to this month - Daylight Savings Time begins on March 9th.   Longer days.  Warmer temperatures - hopefully!  More rides outside - hopefully!  Run the Bluegrass 7 Miler.

Thanks to Toa & The Healthy Tipping Point blog I have a March challenge.  Ironman March.  Swim 2.4 miles, Bike 112 miles & Run 26.2 miles.  If the weather cooperates the bike miles should be a little easier to achieve this month.

March Goals

Swim: 14,400 Yards
Bike: 112 miles
Run: 50 miles
Weights/TRX:  8 sessions
Yoga/Pilates: 2 sessions
Races: 1 - This will be the Run the Bluegrass 7 Miler

Now for the Party Hat.   I took Sammie to get spayed & microchipped a few days ago.  I noticed last night that she pulled 2 of her stitches out so off to the emergency vet we went.  This stuff never happens when your usual vet is open.  The vet stitched her back up & sent her home with an awesome party hat.  This is wrong I realize but this has been hours of entertainment for us today.  She absolutely hates it & is so pitiful.  If only she listened to me.  I tried to warn her about the consequences of her actions but she didn't listen!

2014 Goals

Based on THIS post I saw on Facebook the other day I made my first goal of 2014 to do write down some fitness goals.  These goals are based on how 2013 went.  I took last years miles & bumped them up a reasonable amount.  In addition, I really want to spend some time focusing on strength training.

2014 Goals

Swim - 100 miles.  I achieved this in 2012 so I know it is doable.  This breaks down to roughly 3400 yards a week.  Should be able to achieve this with 2 swims a week.

Bike - 1000 miles.  This includes road & spinning miles.  I equate 1 hour of spinning to 16 miles regardless of what the bike computer says.  I know for certain I can't ride 20+ miles in an hour & that is usually what the bike computer registers after an hour of spin.  This breaks down to around 20 miles per week.

Run - 500 miles.  This equates to about 10 miles a week.  3 runs a week should get me there.  Signing up for Run with Jess' Winter Miles challenge will help kick the year off right.  It starts on January 6th & runs through March 2nd.  I also plan to do the 2014 Runner's World holiday run streak again.  For me, that is a great way to mitigate the damage from the holiday eating challenge.

Weights / TRX - Twice a week.  My Y is using a program called Mobile Fit.  I spent some time over break getting acquainted with the program.  Basically I worked with the trainer & set up my goals & plan - there are a bunch to choose from.  They had a triathlon plan that of course I chose.   Based on the program you get up to 3 strength training workouts per week.   I did the first workout earlier this week & was nicely sore for a few days.  I just found out today that the Y is offering TRX for free now so I plan to work TRX in occasionally as well.

Yoga - Twice a month.  This should really be once a week but with everything else I know that is an impossible goal to achieve.  It is a step up from 2013 when I did yoga 18 times all year.

Races - 12 - I thought about shooting for 14 in 2014 but since 13 in 2013 didn't go so well I figured I would just shoot for 1 race a month.  Thanks to the Resolution 5 Miler yesterday I have January covered & only 11 to go.  At this point, I have no real race schedule planned.   All I know is for the first half of the year I am going to stick to 5K & Sprint triathlons.  If all is feeling well I may target a longer race in the fall.
First Race of 2014 - Treacy & Me
Mary, Audrey, Me & Treacy
Me, Jill, Treacy & Mary
January Goals

Swim: 15,000 Yards
Bike: 85 miles
Run: 40 miles
Weights/TRX:  9 sessions
Yoga: 2 sessions
Races: 1 & already DONE - Resolution 5 Miler on 1/1/14 - 52m18s (10:28 pace)

I have one last non-fitness goal to write down, you know because of THIS post.  Here it goes - I want to retire from engineering at 55.  Not that I will but I want to be in a position to be able to if I so choose.  Now to figure out what my number is.  I am pretty sure it is close to a kazillion.
